ABOUT BELGIUM > Infrastructure

Belgium is a small country with excellent infrastructure. The capital city, Brussels, has a very central position. Its Brussels International Airport is becoming one of the major European hubs with 16 million passengers in 2004, covering over 70 European cities. The airport is conveniently located less than 10 miles from the city center and is reachable within 15 minutes. It offers a frequent direct link by train, as well as taxis and limousine services.

The Railway network used to be the most important in the world per km². All the major cities are linked with Brussels and each other by comfortable, fast and frequent trains. The TGV (high speed train) network is expanding: Paris is now only one hour and 25 minutes from Brussels, Lille only 38 minutes, and London 2 hours and a half through the Channel. Amsterdam and Cologne will be linked soon.

Brussels has 3 train stations: “Brussels North,” “Brussels Midi” (the major one, with direct lines to and from Paris and London), and “Brussels Central” (located just a few steps away from the famous Grand Place).

The Belgian Super-Highway network is known as “one of the two human constructions that are visible from the space” due to its nighttime illumination. It allows any point of the country to be reachable by car within 2 hours from Brussels!

Brussels and Antwerp have a Metro (underground) system as well as an impressive tramway network and the bus system. Tickets (valid on the whole metro-tram-bus system) for individual travelers are available for 1 trip, 10 trips or for 1 day (without limitation).
